Room 2 Cooking with Mrs Swanson!!!

This week we made cakes and jam with Mrs Swanson from Room 1. This was part of our Modular Learning and we went to the Learning Centre to do it.

We learnt that we had to wash our hands before we started cooking because if you don't do that you can spread germs.  We didn't want to make people sick!

Mrs Swanson read the recipes to us so we knew what to do.  We had to follow the instructions carefully.

We enjoyed mixing the cake and spreading the icing on the yummy chocolate cake.  We saved a piece for Miss Clark, she thought it was really tasty!!!

When we made jam Mrs Swanson let us have a turn at mashing the strawberries.  It looked gross but it smelt nice.  We are looking forward to tasting it.

(This blog posting was written by the children in Room 2 - Miss Clark only did the typing.  All photos were taken by the children in Room 2).

The Gruffalo comes to Room 2!

This may be old news (from the beginning of Term 2) but the children were keen to share their experience of going to the theatre in Wellington to see, 'The Gruffalo'.  For some children it was the first time they had been on a 'big bus' and for many it was their first visit to a theatre.  We all loved it! The play was awesome and when Mrs Burton came to teach in Room 2 she made Gruffalo masks with the children.  The photographs were taken by the children - they are amazing photographers.

Who is hiding behind the mask?

Another interesting visitor...

A few weeks ago this little frog came hopping up the steps to visit us. We thought he was a great colour and had a good discussion about him! We've certainly seen some interesting creatures in Room 2.  Today we even found a dead Weta in the class.  Yeuch!!

Module Units for Learning

This week we started our learning Modules.  Modules give children a greater opportunity to experience and learn skills in a more practical 'hands on' approach.  Over the next few weeks the children will also rotate around Classes 1, 2, 3 and 4 so will experience working with different teachers and will benefit from their different talents and skills.  It's also a great way for the teachers to get to know more of the children in the school.
In Room 2 we are focusing on sculpture and modelling techniques.  So far we have made paper sculptures and model clay kiwis.  We've had a lot of great, messy fun!
Keep watching over the next few weeks to find out what else the Room 2 children learn.

E-Learning in Action

In Room 2 we have been learning how to use 'Comic Life'.  Our project is to make posters that will help others to take great photos.  We thought about our photo challenge from Term 1 and brainstormed the question, 'What makes a great photo?' We used the ideas in our posters.

We learnt loads of new skills - opening the Comic Life programme; dragging photos onto the page; adding text and changing the size of the text; saving our work to the desktop and saving our work to our memory sticks as well as quitting the programme properly.

Meet the 'Walking Stick'.

Wow!  Take a look at our class visitor.  This stick insect was found on the school grounds by two of our eagle eyed children.  We used him to launch our HoT Learning (Higher Order Thinking and Learning) topic of the Environment.  As a class we decided to look at the animals of New Zealand and  their habitats and adaptations.  As part of our learning we have visited the Green Rig, brainstormed questions about two of our native birds (the Kiwi and Pukeko) and have started to learn how to find answers to our questions.

This is some our 'Kiwi' art.  We learnt about using shape, space and line to create these pastel and ink pictures.

Welcome to Room 2 - Koputaroa School

Kia Ora and welcome to our class.  We are a class of 22 Year 1 and 2 children.  Our Teacher is called Miss Clark.  We love learning and our days are always busy doing different learning activities.  Take a look at the photographs of our classroom and you will see some of the things that we have been doing.  We hope that you enjoy our blog - we are just learning how to start off a blog and this is our first attempt.
